2  Tuskegee Airmen  Group of African- American bomber pilots.  African-Americans fought in segregated units.  Migration to cities in north and west to work in factories.  Experienced racial tension and segregation  “Double V” campaign  Victory against totalitarianism abroad and racism at home.

3  442 nd Regiment  Formed from volunteers at internment camps  Famous for heroism and high casualties  Received many honors and medals

4  Communication codes  Navajo have an unwritten language, no alphabet, or symbols  Used by Marine Corp in Pacific against Japanese.

5  Many Mexicans and Puerto Ricans immigrated to the United States and were hired to work on the farms due to a labor shortage because of the war.  This program of hiring Mexicans to work on the farms was known as the “Bracero” program.

6  “Rosie the Riveter”  Women take men’s places in factories and at home.  Nurses and non-combat military roles.  Over 6 million women enter the work force in the war industries at home.  Government forced to open over 3,000 day care facilities.
