Work: Page 97 Question: Can you measure how much work a person does? OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to define, calculate and give common examples of work. VOCABULARY: workJoule

Write these questions onto page 97 SKIP ONE LINE BETWEEN EACH QUESTION 1.When is work done? 2.What is the formula for work? 3.In what units is work measured? 4.What are two common examples of doing work?

When is Work Done? WorkWork is done anytime that an object is moved. Remember, objects can only move when a force is applied to them. So, work must involve a force and motion.work

How much work is done? It’s very easy to calculate the amount of work a job takes to do. To calculate work, simply multiply the force, in newtons, being used to move an object by the distance, in meters, the object moves. Work = Force * Distance In what units is work measured? Work is measured in joules.joules

Calculating Work What two tools would be needed to measure work? A Newton measurer to measure the force. A meter stick to measure the distance.

Calculating Work How much work is done when a 40 Newton shopping cart is moved 3 meters? Work = Force * Distance Work = 40 N. * 3 meters Work = 120 joules

Sample Problem BEWARE When calculating work, the unit of force must be in newtons and the unit for distance must be in meters. How much work is done if a 30 N. table is moved 50 centimeters? Work = Force * Distance Work = 30 N. * ? Distance 50 centimeters =.50 meters Work = 30 N. *.50 meters Work = 15 j.

1.When is work done? 2.What is the formula for work? 3.In what units is work measured? 4.What are two common examples of doing work? WorkWork: Review page 97 Write the answers to these questions into your notes.
