3 Plymouth 1620 Founded by the Pilgrims for religious reasons. Pilgrims were persecuted in England because of their religious practices. Pilgrims received charter from James I to start colony in Virginia. Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, Mass instead. The Mayflower Pilgrims praying before setting sail NOT Plymouth rock!

4 The Mayflower Compact First example of self government in the colonies. Pilgrims agreed on majority rule. Pilgrims would obey the decisions made by majority. Pilgrims signed the Compact before they got off the ship. Signing of the Mayflower Compact The Mayflower Compact

6 The First Thanksgiving 3 day feast in the fall Celebrated the good harvest Represented the peace between Pilgrims and Native Americans

7 Massachusetts Bay Colony 1630 Founded by Puritans for religious reasons. Puritans wanted to “purify” the Church of England. Puritans were persecuted in England for their beliefs. Many Puritans were wealthy and powerful.

9 Government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony An elected General Court dealt with major issues. Less important issues were decided in town meetings. Only white men, over 21, who owned property, and were in good standing in the Puritan Church could vote.

10 The Great Migration 1629-1640 Thousands came to Massachusetts Bay fleeing persecution and poverty in England. Many of the newcomers were not Puritans. This influx of non- Puritans weakened political strength of Puritans.

11 Salem Witch Hysteria In 1692 a group of young girls began accusing people in the town of Salem, Mass. of witchcraft. After all was said and done, 19 people were hanged, 1 crushed to death and 4 died in jail. The Trial of George Jacobs
