3 World War II was a global war. It is generally considered to have lasted from 1939 to 1945 It involved the vast majority of the world's nations forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.

4 100 million people, from more than 30 different countries in a state of "total war.” estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history.

5 Winston Churchill British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century Churchill was also an officer in the British Army

6 We Shall Fight on the Beaches This speech was delivered by Churchill on June 4 th, 1940. Speech was delivered after the Nazis invaded France and were moving towards England As we read identify: 2 types of and appeals (patriotism, community/vales, destiny) 1 rhetorical device (alliteration, anaphora, parallelism)

7 Speech to Normandy In December 1943, President Roosevelt decided that Eisenhower would be Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. He was charged in these positions with planning and carrying out the Allied assault on the coast of Normandy in June 1944 under the code name Operation Overlord, the liberation of Western Europe and the invasion of Germany.assault on the coast of NormandyOperation Overlord

8 Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States from 1953 until 1961. He was a five-star general in the United States Army during World War II and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe. He had responsibility for planning and supervising the invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45 from the Western Front.

9 The Invasion of Normandy D – Day D-Day, the date of the initial assaults, was June 6 th 1944. Allied land forces that saw combat in Normandy on that day came from Canada, France and the U.S. This was the Ally attempt to take back occupied France from the Nazis.
