3 Creating greater leadership opportunities Learning disability nurses are best placed to know the needs of the people they serve but you have to create a vision of what will make the care and service different. You can’t inspire others unless you are inspired yourself!

4 Inspiring others u Demonstrate enthusiasm u Inspire others by being optimistic u Invest in people and understand their emotions u Listen and engage with people u Identify shared objectives and goals u Create a reflective transformation learning culture u Share ideas and information u Open to problem finding not just problem solving

5 Leading change u Bring together teams to create your vision use your expert knowledge u Understand and articulate the underlying problems which may exist in the current service u Break down the problems u Positive thinking and trust your judgement

6 Influencing the change u Break down barriers and create integrated team working u Get rid of obstacles, changing systems or structures that undermine the change vision. u Encourage risk taking and non-traditional ideas. u Identify and engage champions e.g. board non-executive or consultant

9 Liberating the NHS u Nurse leaders will need to influence commissioning decision making u They will need to strengthen their role with educational colleagues in both health and social care u Learn from the past and ensure learning disability nurses have a voice at Board level u Nurse leaders need to influence strategically and systematically in a changing environment u They need to use their expertise and knowledge of quality improvement and assurance systems to influence future care provision.
