5 1 st Semester Last semester I worked at PHOBIA at Wild Adventures theme park. Last semester I worked at PHOBIA at Wild Adventures theme park. PHOBIA happens during the month of October as part of their Halloween celebration and includes haunted houses/trails and rides. All the money I earned went to fund the Detachment. The money earned from PHOBIA is enough to fund the Detachment and all of our activities for an entire school year. 7 2 nd Semester Brown Hall Clean Up Brown Hall Clean Up Dorms can be pretty messy sometimes because of all the people living in confined quarters, as well as their guests coming in and out. Because of this (and definitely not because we keep losing visitation because our bathrooms are dirty) my RA sponsored a Brown Hall Clean-up. 8 Alcohol Awareness Fair Alcohol Awareness Fair This semester I also signed up to work at the AFROTC table at the Alcohol Awareness Fair that was held on the Palms Quad. 9 Relay For Life Relay For Life This semester I also worked with and for Relay For Life here at VSU. This semester I also worked with and for Relay For Life here at VSU. It is an overnight event of the American Cancer Society designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures, celebrate survivorship and raise money for research to find more cures for cancer. 10 Relay For Life Relay For Life generally consists of an opening lap in which cancer survivors take part, a ceremony emphasizing “hope” and “cure,” and finally, a closing lap that everyone takes part in. 11 While I was “technically” signed up to work for the FYE team at Relay For Life, I found myself helping out a couple of other teams a little more. For instance, helping out another team’s car wash! (and for those of you wondering: Yes. I am washing my own car.) 12 FYE The Freshman Year Experience team’s theme was based on tie-dye. The Freshman Year Experience team’s theme was based on tie-dye. Tie-dye towels and wash rags were sold for $5 and $3 respectively to raise money for the American Cancer Society. 14 While at Relay I walked a few laps, as well as participated in the events that a few of the tents set up. I also let two of the tents use some of my personal belongings (such as Guitar Hero 2, my GH Guitar, and my Dance Dance Revolution dancing pad) to raise money for Relay. 15 What I Learned While doing my community service I learned a few things. While doing my community service I learned a few things. I learned how to respect the environment around me and the importance of keeping it clean. I learned how to respect the environment around me and the importance of keeping it clean. I learned the value of life and the reward of helping others. I learned the value of life and the reward of helping others. I learned that just because I may be sacrificing my time, that does not mean I am wasting my time. I learned that just because I may be sacrificing my time, that does not mean I am wasting my time.
