3 How Much Do Teachers Make? Benefits (Chicago Public Schools) – Salary – Insurance (Health & Dental) – Retirement (Pension) – Short & Long Term Disability – Life Insurance – Legal Services – Vision Plan

4 How Much Do Teachers Make? Let’s take a look at the most obvious benefit, salary. All teachers, elementary and high school, follow the same salary structure. Everyone who is not an Extra Support Person, Assistant Principal, or Principal follow the same salary structure.

5 How Much Do Teachers Make? Teacher salaries depend on two factors: – Highest degree earned – Years experience Salaries DO NOT depend on the quality of the teacher! That is called merit pay. All of this information is public!

6 How Much Do Teachers Make? Lane I – Bachelor’s Degree Lane II – Master’s Degree Lane III – Master’s + 15 hours Lane IV – Master’s + 30 hours Lane V – Master’s + 45 hours Lane VI – Doctorate

7 How Much Do Teachers Make? Each step is equal to a year’s time. After step 16, there are no more raises for years served. There are raises for cost of living if negotiated. The last contract was a 3 year contract, which included raises each year of about $1,000.

8 How Much Do Teachers Make? For 2015 – 2016 school year, Chicago teachers are working without a contract. The contract expired June 2015. Negotiations are currently underway for a new contract, but if one is not reached, another strike could happen!

9 How Much Do Teachers Make? What is the salary of a teacher with a… – Master’s degree and 5 years experience? – Bachelor’s degree and 12 years experience? – Master’s + 30 and 27 years experience? – A brand new teacher with a bachelor’s degree in their first year?

10 How Much Do Teachers Make? Teacher X is in Lane II, Step 14… Teacher X makes… – $66.89 per hour! – $418.06 per day (Based on 6.25 hours worked per day) – $4180.60 per pay period (Every 2 weeks) – $86,956.48 per year (208 days)

11 How Much Do Teachers Make? Of course Teacher X does not take home all of that money. – Taxes (Federal & State) – Health insurance – Union dues – 403(b) – Additional retirement plan – Other deductions – Teacher X takes home roughly 69% of the gross pay.

12 How Much Do Teachers Make? Not bad for doing something that is: – Meaningful – Something I love to do – Impacting the lives of a lot of people Of course I won’t be filthy rich, but I’m not eating bologna for dinner either!
