1.3 Squares and Square Roots Mme DiMarco

 Learning Goal: How to find squares and square roots of whole numbers. Learning Goal

 Square number: a number that has an odd number of factors  The number 9 is a square number because of its factors 1, 3 and 9  The number 4 is a square number because of its factors 1, 2 and 4  A number times itself always equals a square number What is a square number?

 We can get 49 by multiplying the whole number 7 by 7 (by itself)  We write 7 x 7 = 7 2  We say 7 squared  When we multiply a number by itself, we square the number. Squaring and taking the square are inverse functions, they undo each other  7 x 7 = 49  7 2 = 49  √49 = √7 2  =7 Squaring and Taking the Square Root

 Find the square of each number a)5 a)15 a)32 Examples

 Find the square of each number a)5  5 2 = 5 x 5  5 2 = 25 a)15  15 2 = 15 x 15  15 2 = 225 a)32  32 2 = 32 x 32  32 2 = 1024 Answers

 Find the square root of each number a)16 b)36 c)9 Examples

 Find the square root of each number a)16  √16 = √4 2  √16 = 4 (because 4 x 4 = 16) a)36  √36 = √6 2  √36 = 6 (because 6 x 6 = 36) a)9  √9 = √3 2  √9 = 3 (because 3 x 3 = 9) Answers

 Pages 20 – 21  Questions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 Homework
