1 Early Rock & Roll vs. Black artists By: Mecca Terrell

2 Rock & Roll  Since 1950, rock and roll during its early times was a genre of music that took everyone by storm.  Its diversity brought people of all kinds together and has changed the way we see the world today, and it still is.

3 Racism in Music  Even though music was one of the greatest achievements in history, it wasn’t always used in a good way.  Rock and roll was established during a time where racial tensions were pretty high.  Examples of racism in rock and roll would include whitewashing, resistance to perform, and the influence it has on people.

4 MTV’s Influences  Since 1981, MTV was one of the first TV stations of its time to be completely dedicated to music.  But in earlier times have obtained the image of being racist by resisting to air black artists, who are believed to not be able to fit their Rock and roll image.

5 Whitewashing  A form of racism in music where white artists perform and take credit for songs originally by black artists.  Etta James was a popular black rock and roll artist who created song “Dance With Me Henry” which was performed by white artist, Georgia Gibbs, receiving her big break.

6 Audience Influences  White audiences didn’t exactly want their children listening to black artists perform music, no matter how good they were.  They would listen to whitewashed music just to make sure that their kids would catch onto music by black influences.

7 Conclusion  Even though early times in rock and roll may have been a little rocky itself, things are much better now.  Rock and roll was even said to help build the foundation of bring together people of all kinds into living in peace. Kahoot!
