1 DO NOW Which way do lines of longitude run?
What direction do lines of latitude measure? What point is located at 20 S 100 E? What point is located at 60 S 40 W? What are the coordinates of point F? What line is letter B on?

2 Topographic Map of Angel Island

3 TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS A two-dimensional way of showing a three-dimensional image of Earth’s elevations Topographic maps show elevation.

4

5 ELEVATION Elevation is how high something is above sea level.

6 lines drawn on a map connecting points of equal elevation
TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS CONTOUR LINES lines drawn on a map connecting points of equal elevation (meaning if you physically followed a contour line, elevation would remain constant.)

7 CONTOUR LINES Contour Line

8 ACTIVITY #1

9 TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS CONTOUR INTERVAL The change in elevation between two adjacent (side by side) contour lines

10 CONTOUR INTERVAL To determine contour interval:
Pick one contour line, and determine its elevation. Determine the elevation of the next contour line. Subtract the lower elevation from the higher elevation.

11 What is the Contour Interval?
( ) = 25 feet

12 RELIEF Variations in elevation
TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS RELIEF Variations in elevation

13 TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS DIFFERENCE = RELIEF

14 Relief = higher elevation – lower elevation
CONTOUR INTERVAL Relief = higher elevation – lower elevation

15 RELIEF Difference = RELIEF = 75

16 ACTIVITY #2

17 The incline or steepness of a hill.
SLOPE The incline or steepness of a hill.

18 Slope is Steep Slope is gentle

26 Create a 3D Topographic Map of Angel Island

27 LAB ROLES *Change in roles = working in pairs* Share responsibilities
The paper cutter & play-doh stacker! The Play- Doh Roller! The Play-Doh Cutter!

28 PROCEDURE Cut out map (1/4 sheet) at lowest contour line. (paper cutter) Roll out play doh into thin sheet (play doh roller) Place topographic map over play doh. (play doh cutter) Use paper clip to cut play dough at edges of map (play doh cutter/stacker) Remove this piece of play dough and set aside (play doh cutter/stacker). Each piece will be stacked on top of the previous piece. Cut topographic map at next lowest contour line ( paper cutter). Re-roll play doh (play doh roller) Repeat steps 3-7 until you have completed Angel Island!

29 After you are completed with making 3D Model...
Complete Analysis & Conclusion on for 3D Lab When finished- Raise your hand Mr. Lambert will come over and check your lab for completion. Then Mr. Lambert will give you the homework worksheet that you need to begin immediately- do not waste class time

30 Exit Ticket Match the letter of the topographic map to the description that it fits. ____ 1) The west peak is two contour intervals higher than the east peak. ____ 2) Two peaks of equal height. ____ 3) West slope is gentle, east slope is steep ____ 4) Hill with the same slope on all sides. ____ 5) West slope is slightly steeper than the east slope.
