2 Korean Red Cross Purpose of First Aid Important Definitions  First Aid: Emergency treatment administered to an injured or sick person be fore 119 professional medical care is available.  Emergency Medical Service (EMS): Type of emergency service dedicated to providing out-of-hospital acute medical care and/or transport to definitive c are to patient with illnesses and injuries which render as medical emergenci es. In South Korea, the 119 ambulance is the EMS.  First Responder: The first aid certified person to reach the emergency scen e first, including police, firefighters, ambulance and the general public. Learning Objectives:  Why first aid training is necessary.  Recognizing the signs of an emergency situation.  What actions to take the site of the scene.  How to prevent the spread of infection while conducting first aid.  What items to prepare in case of an emergency.

4 Korean Red Cross Why is First Aid Training Necessary? First Aid Priorities Assess the situation quickly and calmly. Protect yourself and the casualties from danger. Assess the conditions of all casualties. Comfort and reassure the casualties Deal with any life-threatening conditions Obtain medical aid if necessary. Call an ambulance if you su spect a serious illness or injury. First Aid is the initial assistance or treatment given to someone who is injured or suddenly taken ill.

8 Korean Red Cross Step 3: Call to EMS(119) People are often afraid to call 1-1-9 because they are not sure that situation is a real emergency and do not want to waste the time of the EMS. Your decision to act in an emergency should be guided by your own values and by your knowledge of the risks that may be present. However, even if you decide not to give first aid, you should at least call 1-1-9 to get EMS. Become familiar with your local EMS system. It is important because the rapid arrival of emergency medical help greatly increases a person’s chances of surviving a life-threatening emergency.

9 Korean Red Cross Step 4: Give Care Until EMS Arrives If you are prepared for unforeseen emergencies, you can help ensure that care begins as soon as possible for yourself, your family and your fellow citizens. If you are trained in first aid, you can give help that can save a life in the first few minutes of an emergency. First aid can be the difference between life and death. Often, it makes the difference between complete recovery and permanent disability. By knowing what to do and acting on that knowledge, you can make a difference.
