3 USMLE A three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States Step 1 (Basic Sciences)  System and Process  322 multiple choice questions/7 blocks  46 questions/hour (per block)  8 hours (45 min break time + 15 min optional tutorial)  Current passing score for Step 1 = 192  Average score = 220  Can only retake if failed but the first fail shows up in residency application therefore not recommended  Cost $850 US + International location $150 (Aus)  Offered in Melbourne, Sydney  Offered all year round except for first 2 wks of January

4 USMLE Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge)  Clinical diagnosis and disease pathogenesis  368 questions / 8 blocks (44/block)  9 hours  Medicine, Surgery, Peds, Psychiatry, ObsGyn  Significant overlap w step 1 in pharma, pathophys, and bio- stats  Cost $850 US + International location $165 (Aus)  Offered in Sydney and Melbourne Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills)  12 standard patient interactions, 15 min each  Must be taken in US (Philly, Atlanta, LA, Chicago, Houston)  Pass or fail – no numerical score  Costs $1480 Step 3…during residency

5 TIMELINE Must have completed 2 years of medicine before taking steps 1 or 2  Step 1: sooner or later?  favorable to have done internal med rotations before taking step 2 CS Have 7 years from time of first exam to finish Steps 1 and 2  Step 2 CS scores are valid indefinitely Steps 1 and 2 are considered valid for 7 years Registration for all 3 via ECFMG website

8 MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EVALUATING EXAMINATION (MCCEE) 4 hr, 180 MC questions, computer based exam  150 scored, 30 not scored  Cannot retake if passed  Standard score scale 50-500  Average score 271 (s.d. 50), pass score 250 Pre-requisite to Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) and NAC-OSCE Offered up to 5 times a year in a 2-3week testing window (Jan, Feb-March, May, Sept, Oct-Nov) 3 Prometric sites in Australia $1,645 CAD Score valid indefinitely

9 NATIONAL ASSESSMENT COLLABORATION (NAC) OSCE Cost $2190 CAD OSCE stations, 11 min/station, ~3 hours Must have passed the MCCEE to be eligible Prerequisite for some provinces’ IMG assessment programs Must be done in Canada (exam centres in AB, BC, ON, MB, QC, NS) September 2014 test dates, proposed March and Sept test dates in 2015 Score valid indefinitely Preparing: “Therapeutic Choices edited by Jean Gray, published by the Canadian Pharmacists Association”

10 MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA QUALIFYING EXAMINATION P1 Only offered in Canada Content:  196 MC questions in a 3.5 hr morning session (75% of score)  4 hr clinical decision making session in short menu and short answer write-in format involving 60 cases and 80 questions. (25% of score) $950 CAD Required by some but not all programs (the minority) Sessions in April/May and Oct/Nov of every year Written after graduation, must have passed the MCCEE
