READING CIRCLE GRAPHS

COMPLETE THE CHART Create fractions out of 100 PERCENTAGEFRACTION 16% 8% 20% 75%

Percentages and Fractions: What’s the connection In your own words, describe the relationship between percentages and fractions?

Percentages and Fractions: What’s the connection Let’s take a look at Jenny Eather’s definition of “percent”. She paints a clear picture of the relationship between percent and fractions. http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/dict ionary.html http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/dict ionary.html

Circle Graphs A circle graph shows how a whole of something is divided into parts. Just like fractions!

Reading and Interpreting Circle Graphs So the bigger the percentage, the greater the section will be in the graph. Look at the graph on the following slide, if 50 people were surveyed, how many people like grapes? What is the most liked fruit? What is the least liked fruit?

Reading and Interpreting Circle Graphs

If 20% of the graph is taken up by grapes then 20% of 50 people like grapes. In math the word “of” tells us we need to multiply 20% x 50 BUT WAIT we never multiply a percent in percent form we MUST change it to decimal form (divide the percent by 100).20 x 50 = 10, so 10 people out of 50 like grapes.

For Homework Work through the “Inquire” section on pg. 316 of Math power 7 and all of the questions on pg. 317.
