1 THE QUALIFICATIONS IN PRACTICE: PASTORS, STEWARDS Qualifications not theoretical, but practical Easy to understand the need for them by looking to the work of elders Different words used of elders express different aspects of Bible teaching about them. Pastors (shepherds), stewards (caretakers) are two term used.

2 PASTORS/SHEPHERDS Must be able to teach - whenever, wherever teaching is needed, 1 Tim. 3:2; all qualifications necessary for example, understanding Edify the church - watch, warn, encourage, instruct, reprove, rebuke, comfort Teaching the group, teaching individual saints Use sound doctrine to convince, exhort gainsayers, Tit. 1: 9; also done by preachers, 2 Tim. 4:2 Love for souls, alertness to duty-to strengthen, save souls, Ezek. 3:17-21

3 Feed the flock, 1 Pet. 5:1-3- guide in teaching program, teach personally, make suggestions to preachers Lead in exercising proper discipline, 1 Thes. 5:14- 15-respected men add dignity, wisdom to the practice of discipline Edify by giving others opportunity to develop in edifying others, 1 Thes. 5:14; Heb. 3:12-14- personal work classes, training classes, ladies’ classes, young people’s classes PASTORS/SHEPHERDS

4 STEWARDS/CARETAKERS Tit. 1:7, all qualifications involved in caring for another’s sheep Stewards of their own souls, Acts 20:28 - heed to self, growing to maturity in qualities gained, self a priority for others to heed them Stewards of souls of others, Acts 20:28 - watching over God’s heritage, 1 Pet. 5:3; Heb. 13:17; leading, feeding, tending Stewards of the Scriptures (able to teach) - Handle dangers with the Word of God, Acts 20:28; Tit. 1:9
