3 disputation (n.): verbal controversy The disputation between the three students quickly turned into an intense hallway fight.

4 dissolute (adj.): lacking restraint; marked by indulgence in things The dissolute lifestyle of the college freshman has become legendary.

5 hale (adj.): of sound and vigorous health Proof of just how hale and hearty the young student is can be found in his ability to perform 100 push-ups in two minutes.

6 hirsute (adj.): having a hairy covering Jessie’s hirsute legs caused shock and awe in his friends, who quickly grabbed daggers to defend themselves.

7 ignominious (adj.): shameful “Following an ignominious loss in battle, the bodies of soldiers of the Confederate armies littered the battlefield.”

8 irascible (adj.): prone to anger The irascible nature of both students made it almost inevitable that they would get into a serious fight over who got to play Benedick.

9 litigious (adj.): quarrelsome. “The litigious employee sued his employer for something as inconsequential as not being able to carry his fencing sword into the office.”

10 loquacious (adj.): talkative Britney is far too loquacious for her own good, and thus her fellow soldiers decided to tape her mouth shut so that she could not reveal important information to the enemy.

11 militant (adj.): of a warlike or combative disposition or tendency My students have become rather militant about vocabulary words—if they aren’t allowed to create the pictures themselves, they threaten to attack.
