EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 1 Active Safety Vehicle Systems and HMI. Topics in need of a Holistic Approach for Integrated Solutions Ulf Palmquist EUCAR / Volvo

EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 2 Some Topics of Concern Initial (Prometheus) Approach: Separate systems (sensing, computing, info., acting) Add-on, Fragmented Need to strengthen a more “Holistic” Approach: Find coordination and interrelation between - the safety functions e.g. ACC and Collision Avoidance - the vehicle e.g. Stop & Go info to Starter/Generator supported powertrain - the driver

EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 3 Cluster of interconnected vehicles Short range sensors Link with infrastructure for traffic guidance Visible camera for lane and front area recognition Navigation as long range sensor Front obstacle radar Collision Warning and Avoidance

EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 4 Some Topics of Concern (cont.) Technological Sensor fusion for improved accuracy Integration of systems (more functions/hardware) Architecture for the information flow in the vehicle NB: More difficult to introduce complex, integrated systems (Risk that price goes up, reliability down). E.g. Collision Avoidance, Lane Keeping as separate or sensor fused and integrated systems. Vehicle - Infrastructure deployment strategy Autonomous vehicle functions v.s. Infrastructure supported ones What should be in the vehicle and what should the infrastructure provide ? E.g. Road/Tire Friction Estimation.

EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 5 Where and When is it Safe to Compete for the Attention of the Driver….?

EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 6 Primary Task S.T. Secondary Task Emergency Today : S.T. = radio, climate Secondary Task Increase of S.T. mainly due to telematics Secondary Task OVERLOAD INFORMATION / RED LINE P. T.S. T. Emergency Selected upper level of cognitive load Adaptive Management of HMI: Evolutionary HMI Influence of Intelligent Functions/Systems on Driver Cognitive Tasks

EUCAR IST Workshop 23 May 2000 7 HMI: Still a long way to go Simple, self-explaining systems (Start & Go) Over-loading the driver is unacceptable Clear understanding of - systems capacity and operational domain - drivers tasks and responsibilities - handing over of tasks between System and Driver (No grey zones of ambiguity) Minimal harmonisation/standards of interface and functions need to be developed and accepted System Driver
