Caroline Roche SCIENCE RESEARCH ARTICLES

 Why should we care?  Nearly 90% of people get a headache at least once in their lifetime  Headaches can disturb many common daily activities ARTICLE 1: HEADACHE TREATMENT

 Common Forms of headaches  Tension type (TTH)  Migraine  Research  Dutch researchers analyzed 119 random people and found that “no treatment” and placebo groups both had a less effective outcome than the treated patients ARTICLE 1: HEADACHE TREATMENT

 The Process and Results  The people entered in the trial all had no results with non-pharmacological treatments  The researchers found that the people in the pharmacological group had a 38.5% recovery rate  The “no treatment” and placebo group had a 15% recovery rate  Researchers proved that the placebo did not take effect in this study ARTICLE 1: HEADACHE TREATMENT

 Why should we care?  Sleeping and napping is a common form of relief of TTH  Many people do this without realizing the consequences ARTICLE 2: BEHAVIORAL LINK IN INSOMNIA AND TTH

 Researc h:  Researchers at Rush University Medical Center found that there is a direct link between common headaches and insomnia  Napping to get rid of headaches during the day caused lack of sleep at night leading to TTH the next day  The lack of sleep made headaches stronger for the following day ARTICLE 2: BEHAVIORAL LINK IN INSOMNIA AND TTH

 Process and Results:  Researchers had 32 women who had strong TTH in one group and 33 women who had less severe headaches in the second group  The polls amongst the women showed that the women with the stronger headaches napped more during the day  In conclusion, napping during the day can cause harsher headaches and insomnia ARTICLE 2: BEHAVIORAL LINK IN INSOMNIA AND TTH

 Why should we care?  Sleep is something everyone relies on because it recharges the body  Lack of sleep can lead to lower thresholds of pain  Since Cancer patients are already weak this can cause greater pain ARTICLE 3: SLEEP TROUBLE LEADS TO PAIN IN CANCER PATIENTS

 Research  The study suggests that sleep problems lead to increased pain and fatigue in cancer patients  The relationship between pain and sleep often has been presumed to be reciprocal.  However, in the study, a model of reciprocal connection could not be fit to the data, and replicas in which pain caused trouble sleeping did not fit as well as the model in which trouble sleeping caused pain. ARTICLE 3: SLEEP TROUBLE LEADS TO PAIN IN CANCER PATIENTS

 Process and results  The people in the study:  had an average age of 61.5 years,  74 percent were female.  Breast cancer was the most common form of cancer  25 percent of study subjects had received chemotherapy in the last 30 days.  Several studies have shown that cognitive behavioral therapy improves sleep in cancer patients who have insomnia.  The studies show that this type of intervention may decrease patients' pain and fatigue by improving their sleep.
