1 Shifting Our Roles: How Classroom Faculty Can Supplement Counseling Services Christie Jamshidnejad, Diablo Valley College David Morse, Long Beach City College Melynie Schiel, Copper Mountain College

2 Counseling Presentations Invite transfer counselors or transfer center directors to the classroom to speak during class time. Take the students as a group to the transfer center for a presentation during class time.

3 Distributing Information Announce transfer activities during class Develop materials that can be distributed and discussed in class. – Information may be compiled from listening to transfer presentations or discussions with counseling. – Be sure to verify all information you provide to students with counseling to ensure accuracy. – Urge students to see counselors for more information

4 Liaisons to Departments Some colleges assign counselors to work with specific departments in order to improve communication between classroom faculty and support services.

5 Benefits of Classroom Faculty Involvement in Advising Classroom faculty may be able to advise students more clearly regarding the specific content of courses students are considering. With more knowledge of content, classroom faculty may be able to help give students a more realistic expectation of workload. Other?

6 Faculty as Mentors to Majors Long standing proposal enacted at some colleges and universities: classroom faculty take on official mentor or advising role, especially for majors. To what degree are classroom faculty qualified top advise students, especially majors in their departments? Classroom faculty cannot and should not be asked to replace general counseling.
