AN ORGANISATION FOR A NATIONAL EARTH SCIENCE INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM AuScope Grid Architecture “Where does your architecture fit in with the big picture?” Ryan Fraser AuScope Grid Implementation Manager CSIRO

Acronyms and Names you will hear … … but you don’t need to know Standards for developing information models (OGC, GML, CGI, GeoSciML) Support Tools (help you create Information Models) –UML, Hollow world and Fullmoon, XML Processors Geography Markup Language

Some lessons we’ve learnt… Open Geospatial Consortium –Use OGC as a starting point –And its information standards… –And its service interfaces… –It can be quite a stack of paper! –Breaks problems into specific aspects –Get community specialist help OGC is NOT enough –domain specific vocabularies required –Security? Guard Services –Point of Truth (Resolution) –Service Registries –Units of Measure –Domain specific information models

URN Resolver Service Vocabulary Service Community Agreed Service Interfaces and Information Models AuScope service catalog Standard Vocabularies Service Registry Discovery Layer Exchange Layer Resources Discovery Portal Government Department Data Geological Survey Web Feature Service (WFS) Analysis Workflow With Application Schemas The Service Architecture

Community Agreed Service Interfaces and Information Models AuScope service catalog Standard Vocabularies Vocabulary Service Service Registry Discovery Layer Exchange Layer Resources Discovery Portal Government Department Data Geological Survey Web Feature Service (WFS) Client App/Workflow The Service Architecture URN Resolver Service Little or no change required here Translation to standards here

Things to watch out for Your data isn’t as consistent as you’d hoped Private information models exposed –Some wfs middleware by default will display your private information model Technology doesn’t quite allow you to jump from what you have to what you need in 1 configurable step… –Components can be improved

Other things in the architecture that you need to consider… Security – where does it fit in? –Guard functions –Firewalls Network –Latency/Bandwidth –Reliability (response times) –Connections between Exchange Layer and Resource Layer –Multiple client connections Performance and Production Services –Caching –Service Level Agreements –Fallback
