AQA Science © Nelson Thornes Ltd 2006 1 P3 1.2 Hydraulics systems Objectives Be able to describe what pressure is and how it applied to hydraulic systems. 27 February 2016

P3 1.2 AQA Science © Nelson Thornes Ltd 2006 2 Outcomes All MUST be able to describe what a hydraulic system is. MOST SHOULD be able to use the equation for pressure in a hydraulic system. SOME COULD relate hydraulic systems to the conservation of energy and work done.

P3 1.2 Definition: Hydraulics is the use of pressure in liquids. To understand hydraulics, last lesson we wentthrough what pressure is. Pressure is the Force per Unit Area. Pressure (Pascals) = Force (N) / Area (m 2 ) Hydraulics introduction (watch just the hydraulics bit – not the pneumatics bit) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlmRa-9zDF8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlmRa-9zDF8

P3 1.2 Hydraulics demonstrations What is the pressure inside a closed system? Why are hydraulic systems sometimes called force multipliers? AQA Science © Nelson Thornes Ltd 2006 4

P3 1.2 Literacy and Numeracy Tasks 1(ALL) Write a tweet about what is on page 156 (NO MORE THAN 140 CHARACTERS) Questions 1 – 4 (when doing question 4 draw figure 3 or figure 4 to help your explanation. AQA Science © Nelson Thornes Ltd 2006 5 2(MOST) Do question 5 (write out the question first) 3(SOME) By answering question 6 explain why hydraulic systems don’t break the Law of Conservation of Energy

P3 1.2 Stand up Sit Down – ALL STAND UP. DO NOT SAY ANYTHING. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN YOUR HEAD. WHEN YOU CAN’T ANSWER – SIT DOWN What is pressure? What is the unit of pressure? What is a hydraulic system? Why are hydraulic systems sometimes called force multipliers? Look at the simple hydraulic system below and explain how it produces an output force. Explain how even though a small input force can provide a large output force in a hydraulic system, the law of conservation of energy is not broken.
