Good Morning, Precalculus! When you come in, please.... 1. Grab your DO NOW sheet 2. Take out something to write with, and a notebook. 3. Begin your DO NOW! Do Now: 1. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Please write as many details as possible!

Today's Agenda: 1. Do Now 2. Unit Timeline 3. Today's Objective 4. Unit 4 Pre-Test & Corrections 5. Intro to Unit 4, Objective 1 6. Closing

Unit Timeline W ARNING: THIS UNIT IS VERY SHORT!

Unit Timeline T oday 11/16: Begin Obj. 1 Monday 11/19: Finish Obj. 1 Tuesday 11/20: Begin Obj. 2 Wednesday 11/21: Finish Obj. 2 THANKSGIVING BREAK WILL BE ON 11/22 AND 11/23 Monday 11/26: Begin Obj. 3 Tuesday 11/27: Finish Obj. 3 Wednesday 11/28: Unit 4 Review Thursday 11/29: Unit 4 Test!!! WRITE THIS DOWN!!!

Today's Objective U nit 4, Objective 1: I will be able to analyze and graph exponential functions and solve problems using exponential functions.

Unit 4 Pre-Test

P lease complete your pre-test independently and silently! When you are finished, please put your pencil down and wait for others to finish.

Unit 4 Pre-Test S elf-Corrections

Unit 4 Pre-Test S elf-Corrections

Unit 4 Pre-Test S elf-Corrections

Intro to Unit 4, Obj. 1: Exponential Functions

Exponential functions have the form f(x) = bx, where: 1. b is a positive real number 2. the exponent is a variable Vocab:

Exponential Functions With your partner, graph the function f(x) = 2x. Sketch the graph and complete the table below.

Exponential Functions Use the graph of f(x) = 2x and the table of values to answer the questions below: 1. What is the domain of this function? 2. What is the range? 3. y-intercept? 4. Is it continuous? 5. What's the horizontal asymptote? 6. What's the vertical asymptote?

Exponential Functions With a partner, sketch the graphs of f(x) = 2x, f(x) = 2x + 3, and f(x) = 2x-2 on the same set of axes. Compare and contrast the graphs and write down some observations. What are some similarities and differences that you notice between the graphs of the three different functions?

Exponential Growth & Decay

When a function loses value exponentially over time, the graph exhibits exponential decay. Example: the rate at which an object cools.

Exponential Growth & Decay When a function increases exponentially over time, the graph exhibits exponential growth. Ex: the population of people or animals in the world.

Exponential Growth & Decay The general form of exponential growth and decay can be summarized as below:

Closing

Your homework for the weekend: -Read pgs 704-706 (about what we did today) -Using what you have read, try and write the correct equation that would be used to model the question. (you aren't SUPPOSED to know the right answer - but you should try anyway!)
