INSTRUCTIONS: Using ALL of the words below, write a paragraph that explains what you learned about central idea during our previous lesson. Central ideathememoral messagesupportquote
First, determine the central idea of the text. Second, answer the following questions in order to identify the main ideas: Who?What? When? Where? Why?How? Next, write the summary, which should be brief because you are focusing on the central and main ideas of the text. Use an objective tone, meaning not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased.
Demeter is the goddess of the earth who had a daughter with Zeus with Persephone. One day, Hades kidnaps Persephone and takes her to the Underworld. Because Demeter is so saddened by her daughter’s absence, plants stop growing, so Zeus decides Hades has to give Persephone back. However, Persephone eats six pomegranate seeds while in Tartarus, so she must be there for six months, and back on earth’s surface for the next six. This shows how much a mother loves her children and will do anything to stay with them.
Athena is the goddess of wisdom and strategy who invented weaving. A young human named Arachne bragged one day that she was a better weaver than Athena. Instead of punishing Arachne right away, Athena decided to have a competition between the two; if Arachne won, she lived, but if she lost, she died. When Athena won, Arachne hanged herself. Afterward, Athena turned Arachne into the first spider. Arachne learned not to be arrogant from her experiences with Athena.
