Naming Acids (notes)

1. If the acid DOES NOT contain oxygen (hydr-acid): Use the prefix “hydro” and the suffix “ic” attached to the root name. Example: HCl Hydrochloric acid

2. If the acid contains oxygen (oxy-acid): Use the root element or the anion name with suffix “ic” or “ous”. If the anion is “ate” like in nitrate use “ic”, if the anion is “ite” like in nitrite use “ous” Example: NO 3 - NitrateHNO 3 Nitric acid NO 2 - NitriteHNO 2 Nitrous acid ion acid

Keep the “per” or “hypo”: Example: ClO 4 - perchlorateHClO 4 perchloric acid ClO 3 - chlorateHClO 3 chloric acid ClO 2 - chloriteHClO 2 chlorous acid ClO - hypochloriteHClOhypochlorous acid ionacid
