THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE… An Alyssa and Charlotte Production

THE 3 WONDERS OF SCIENCE WE WILL BE LEARNING ABOUT ARE... Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Fermentation and then we will do a comparison of all 3!

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Converts energy from the sun into food Oxygen + Glucose + light energy =food and energy

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Occurs in the chlorophyll Only found in plant cells OR some kinds of prokaryotic cells which contain chloroplast CHLOROPLAST: the green pigment used to capture the sun’s energy

PHOTOSYNTHESIS REQUIRES: PRODUCES: CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 H 2 O O 2 Light energy (sun light) 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + light energy C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2

CELLULAR RESPIRATION The use of oxygen to release food for cell use Also called respiration Occurs in the mitochondria of ALL cells! !

CELLULAR RESPIRATION Requires oxygen, hydrogen and ATP Produces reactants, products and ATP for cell energy c 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 + 2 ATP 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 o + 38 ATP

FERMENTATION Fermentation is... The releasing of energy from glucose without the use of O 2 Also called anaerobic respiration

FERMENTATION Occurs in the cytoplasm of prokaryotic and fungus cells and eukaryotic muscle cells Fungus Cells Eukaryotic Muscle Cells Prokaryotic Cell

FERMENTATION In fungi and bacteria cells: C 6 H 12 O 6 is broken down without O 2 to release... 4 ATP and CO 2 + Alcohol

FERMENTATION In muscle cells of multicelled organisms: C 6 H 12 O 6 is broken down without O 2 to release... 4 ATP and Latic Acid

COMPARISON (THINGS IN COMMON) Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, and fermentation are in plant and most prokaryotic cells. Cellular Respiration and fermentation both break down glucose, are found in animal cells, release energy, and obtain energy from ATP Photosynthesis and cellular respiration both are found in plant cells

COMPARISON (DIFFERENCES) Photosynthesis produces glucose, traps and stores energy, obtains it’s energy from the sun, releases O 2 and takes in CO 2. While Cellular Respiration and Fermentation do not. Cellular respiration takes in O 2 Fermentation doesn’t use O 2
