1. Use the distributive property: -4( x + 4) 2. Use the distributive property and simplify: 3(t – 12) + 11t 3. Solve for k 12k + 33 = 93 REMEMBER! You should be making connections with math and other subjects in your journals!

 Example:  2c + c + 12 = 78  3c + 12 = 78 3c = 66 c = 22 -12 33 1) 3x – 4x + 21 = 122 You try! 2) 4z – 16 + 2z = 56 Z = 12

 Solving with distribution and combining like terms: Example:  -5(b – 3) = -55 -5(b – 3) = -55 -5b + 15 = -55-15 -5b = -70 ÷-5 b = 14 Now you try! 4( 2w + 9) = 84 W = 6 - ( x + 12) = 42 X = - 30

 A gardener is planning a rectangular garden area in a community garden. His garden will be next to an existing 12-ft fence. The gardener has a total of 44ft of fencing to build the other 3 sides of his garden. How long will the garden be if the width is 12 ft? 12ft x Length of side + 12ft + length of side = 44ft X + 12 + X = 44 2x + 12 = 44 - 12 -12 2x = 32 ÷ 2 ÷2 x = 16 ft

 A carpenter is building a rectangular fence for a playground. One side of the playground is the wall of a building 70ft wide. He plans to use 340ft of fencing material. What is the length of the playground if the width is 70ft? 135ft
