3 C OYOTES At one time, they lived only in prairies and deserts in the western United States and Mexico. Now, coyotes can survive almost anywhere in North America. This includes the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Adult coyotes can be grow to 23 to 25 inches high at the shoulder and are 3.4 to 4.3 feet long. Adult coyotes weigh between 20 and 50 pounds. 5 F AMILY When coyotes are about 2 years old, they choose a mate for life. Females select the den site and give birth to 1- 12 pups (baby coyotes). Both parents care the pups, they chew the food and swallow it. Then they regurgitate it for the pups. Parents give mice to pups, so pups can practice hunting

6 O THER C OOL F ACTS In Native American stories coyotes are clever and tricky. This reputation is based on fact. Coyotes can trick other animals. A coyotes may jump around near a group of birds to create a diversion. Then its partner will sneak up on the birds and take some of them for a meal. Coyotes can woof, growl, bark, howl and sing. They communicate with 11 different sounds, as well as with body language and scent
