1 Bell Ringer (5 mins) Describe how music is grouped in a store or online. What is the advantage of having it grouped this way?

2 Classification Organization Systems

3 Objectives Identify methods of classification used to organize living things. Use tools of classification systems to identify organisms based on descriptions.

4 Better Understanding through Order
Classification Systems are … Example: Taxonomy – rank based system

5 The Science of Taxonomy
Taxonomists use ranking – taxa From broad to specific Largest is kingdom – Smallest is species –

6 Taxa: Level of Classification from largest to smallest – human classification ( )
Kingdom (Animalia) Phylum (Chordata) Class (Mammalia) Order (Primates) Family (Hominidae) Genus (Homo) Species (Sapiens)

7 Classification – How To?
Classification tools are developed Based on structure or function 2nd Example: Dichotomous key –

8 Classify objects based on structural characteristics
Study & note characteristics Write brief descriptions Group based on similarities

9 Design and construct a dichotomous key
Make a list of yes or no questions. Begin with a broad question Direct the reader to another question Use question and answer system until the object in each subgroup can be identified.

10 Bug Pics 1 5 2 6 3 4 9 7 8 12 10 11

11 Classification Lab Review the descriptions provided for each breed of dog. Use the classification systems provided (hierarchy chart, dichotomous key) to determine the type of dog for each description.

12 What type of scientists do you think work in the field of taxonomy?
Bell Ringer What type of scientists do you think work in the field of taxonomy? How would their field affect how they group organisms?

13 Problem with Classifying Species
Taxonomists debate over many years how to classify organisms in different species. Biologists and Geneticists may classify species differently based on their focus.

14 Different Ways of Identifying
Biologists – use structures and their functions; Such as size of head, number of teeth, ability to produce fertile offspring

15 Different Ways of Identifying
Geneticists - use biochemical make-up; Such as nucleotide sequences of DNA and chromosome comparisons.

16 Is the red wolf a separate species? (page 447)
Problem Solving Lab 17.1 Draw Conclusions Is the red wolf a separate species? (page 447)

17 Analyze Picture How would scientists classify the organisms represented in the picture? What traits do you think would be most helpful?

18 Phylogeny – Evolutionary relationships
Based on: Structural similarities Breeding behavior Geographic distribution Chromosome comparison Biochemistry

19 Cladogram – Phylogenic model of species
Branching Diagram Shows proposed ancestry Based on derived traits Assumes common ancestor Branches closer together share more recent ancestral group

20 Pic Sort: Dinosaurs Examine the pictures on the next slide. Group the dinosaurs based on how close you think they are related. Describe the traits you think best represents each group.

21 Stegosaurus Archaeopteryx Plateosaurus Pachycephalosaurus Parasaurolophus Triceratops Allosaurus

22 Classify Use Cladogram to Show Relationships MiniLab 17.2 (p. 453)

23 Bell Ringer (2 mins) Compare the seven taxa with the sentences above.
“Kick poor cats off fair grounds Saturday.” “Kings play chess on fine glass sand.” “Kids pile cheese on fresh green salad.” Compare the seven taxa with the sentences above. What do these sentences have to do with memorizing the seven major taxa?

24 Mnemonics: Cue Phrase You will need to memorize the major taxa: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Each word on the list begins with the same letter as each word in each sentence.

25 Mnemonics: Cue Phrase Think up your own cue phrase to remember the major taxa. Once you have the sentence memorized, you’ll have no trouble memorizing the taxa.

26 Look at the scientific names below:
Felis wiedii, Panthera tigris, Felis concolor What animals are in the same genus? Are any of these animals closely related to the house cat (Felis domesticus)? How do you know?

27 Scientific Names Linnaeus Classification System Binomial nomenclature
Scientific name is the genus and species First word begins with a capital letter Second word is lowercased

28 What’s in a Name? Many group names are in Latin or Greek – Scientists don’t use common names of organisms Shows evolutionary closeness

29 Scientific Names Scientific Name Common Name Ulmus americana American elm Rattus norvegicus urban rat Camelus bactrianus desert camel Equus zebra zebra Elephas maximus great elephant Canis lupus grey wolf Homo sapien human

30 Common Name “House Cat”
Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Family Felidae Genus Felis Species F. domesticus

31 Compare Taxa Levels House Cat, Leopard, Anteater & Octopus
Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Mollusca Class Mammalia Cephalopoda Order Carnivora Edentata Octopoda Family Felidae Myrmecophagidae Octopodidae Genus Felis Myrmecophaga Panthera Species F. domesticus M. tridactyla P. pardus O. vulgaris

32 Reflection Questions See handout
