Cooperation Strategy in Polar Regions, ITALY – KOREA workshop, Incheon, 6-8 September, 2011 Arctic Circle, 2015, Reykjavik, October 16 - 18, Iceland Motivations  Know accuracy of measured key-quantities  Dedicated calibration procedures and specific uncertainty evaluation  Comparability of results  Reduce gaps in time series  Overpass/reduce logistical difficulties  Reduce costs/increase sustainability

Cooperation Strategy in Polar Regions, ITALY – KOREA workshop, Incheon, 6-8 September, 2011 Arctic Circle, 2015, Reykjavik, October 16 - 18, Iceland A permanent calibration laboratory at Ny Alesund. Unique standard calibration procedures for instrument operating in the same peculiar environment avoid different national approaches to introduce further discrepancies and uncertainties, incrementing the comparability of the instruments response. offer the opportunity for researchers to directly follow the calibration and test of their Instruments. A central infrastructure to benefit all researchers operating in the area, with a common implementation plan.

Cooperation Strategy in Polar Regions, ITALY – KOREA workshop, Incheon, 6-8 September, 2011 Arctic Circle, 2015, Reykjavik, October 16 - 18, Iceland Mission “Arctic Metrology” 2014

Cooperation Strategy in Polar Regions, ITALY – KOREA workshop, Incheon, 6-8 September, 2011 Arctic Circle, 2015, Reykjavik, October 16 - 18, Iceland Steps to reach the goal  Reinforce dialogue with metrology community and identify areas of common interest  Develop an implementation plan  Secure resources  Consolidate the pioneering role of NYA in advancing Arctic Metrology, working together to realise the lab

A Global Distributed Regional RI in the European Arctic Building on the existing extensive Research Infrastructure Better coordination, integration and collaboration under a joint framework SIOS - Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (www.sios-svalbard.org) Ocean and seafloor observatories Russian Science Centre in Barentsburg Longyearbyen Research Park and University Centre in Svalbard Ny-Ålesund International Research Station Polish Polar Station in Hornsund Vision: Establish a cooperating and transparent research infrastructure which will give better estimates of the future environmental and climate changes in the Arctic.

OPTIMIZATION PLAN AND CORE ACTIVITIES

Cooperation Strategy in Polar Regions, ITALY – KOREA workshop, Incheon, 6-8 September, 2011 Arctic Circle, 2015, Reykjavik, October 16 - 18, Iceland WP 2: Metrology, quality and harmonization The WP aims to address the crucial issue of data heterogeneity (in broad sense) Two specific questions WP2 aims to address are of interest for metrological community: (a) well-calibrated measurements and traceability; (b) long homogeneous time series and NRT applications;
