2 What is Glaze? Glaze- a mixture that when fired melts to create a glass finish over ceramics WHEN FIRING GLAZE WORK WE CALL IT A GLAZE FIRING

3  Types of Glazes Opaque glaze- no images will be seen and may cove any texture Translucent glaze- will not allow decoration beneath to be seen clearly Transparent glaze- clear enough to see through Matt glaze- non shinny surface BISQUE- FIRST FIRE GLAZE FIRE- SECOND FIRE

4 How to apply Glaze DIPPING – TO SUBMERGE UNDER A SURFACE BRIEFLY TO COAT BRUSHING – TO PAINT GLAZE USUALLY TWO TO THREE COATS What areas of your work do you apply glaze? Interior of your cup The exterior areas that do not meet the kiln shelf. What not to glaze? The bottom of you artwork that will rest on the kiln self. Why? Glaze will melt and turn to glass which will cause you work to stick to the kiln shelf. Each Student is required to wipe the bottom of their work with a damp sponge.
