Feeding of 5000 John 6:1-14

Jesus’ feeding the 5000 is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew 14:13-21 Mark 6:30-44 Luke 9:10-17 John 6:1-14

Although the mountain setting simply provides a location for Jesus to perform a notable miracle, it is not without symbolism. Many significant events in Jesus’ ministry occurred on a mountain. Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) The Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-5) The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20)

Many other significant events occurred on mountains in the history of God’s people. Sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22:1-3) The Giving of The Law (Exodus 19:20-20:17) Defeat of Prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20-4)

Jesus is presented as the antitype of Jesus; He is not merely used by God to provide bread for His people, but is Himself sent by God as the life-giving ‘bread’ who gives life for the world (Andreas J. Kostenberger, John). John 6:35 (ESV) Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

John 6:1-2 (ESV) After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Why do you think a large crowd was following Jesus?

John 6:1-2 (ESV) After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Why do you think a large crowd was following Jesus? - Some sought relief from physical ailments Luke 8:43-44 (ESV) And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.

John 6:1-2 (ESV) After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Why do you think a large crowd was following Jesus? - Some may have followed out of curiosity Luke 23:8 (ESV) When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.

John 6:1-2 (ESV) After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Why do you think a large crowd was following Jesus? - Some may have considered Him to be the potential deliverer of political Israel Luke 24:21 (ESV) But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

John 6:3 (ESV) Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Mark 6:32 (ESV) And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. Why do you think Jesus went with His disciples to a “desolate place” like this mountain?

John 6:4 (ESV) Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Why do you think crowds traveling for the Passover feast would come to a desolate location like this?

Matt 14:14 (ESV) When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Mark 6:34 (ESV) When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. Why do you think the day was like?

Mark 6:35-36 (ESV) And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” As evening approached, what did the disciples suggest to Jesus?

John 6:5 (ESV) Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” Rather than heeding the advice of His disciples, what did Jesus do? John 6:6 (ESV) He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip was a local from nearby Bethsaida. What kind of test was this?

John 6:7 (ESV) Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” How did Philip do on the test?

John 6:7 (ESV) Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” How did Philip do on the test? How much is 200 denarii?

John 6:7 (ESV) Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” How did Philip do on the test? How much is 200 denarii? If you were in Philip’s place, tasked with coming up with an idea for feeding the crowd because you knew the area, but faced with the fact that it would take a lot of money, how would you feel?

John 6:8-9 (ESV) One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Not wanting to give up, Andrew came up with what idea?

John 6:8-9 (ESV) One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Not wanting to give up, Andrew came up with what idea? How do you think the other disciples responded to this plan?

John 6:8-9 (ESV) One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Not wanting to give up, Andrew came up with what idea? How do you think the other disciples responded to this plan? Do you think Andrew believed this would be of any real value?

John 6:10 (ESV) Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. Regardless of how Philip, Andrew, and the other disciples felt about the situation, how did Jesus respond to it?

John 6:10 (ESV) Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. How many people were in the crowd?

John 6:10 (ESV) Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. How many people were in the crowd? How do you think they knew how many were there?

John 6:10 (ESV) Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. How many people were in the crowd? How do you think they knew how many were there? Mark 6:40 (ESV) So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.

Why do you think a crowd, possibly as large as 20,000 people, willingly complied with Jesus’ instructions?

John 6:10 (ESV) Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. How many people were in the crowd? How do you think they knew how many were there? Mark 6:40 (ESV) So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. Why do you think a crowd, possibly as large as 20,000 people, willingly complied with Jesus’ instructions? What do you think they were thinking about?

Ex 16:4-5 (ESV) Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” Could Jesus possibly provide for us like Moses had done?

2 Kings 4:42-44 (ESV) A man came from Baal- shalishah, bringing the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Elisha said, “Give to the men, that they may eat.” 43 But his servant said, “How can I set this before a hundred men?” So he repeated, “Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat and have some left.’” 44 So he set it before them. And they ate and had some left, according to the word of the Lord. Could Jesus possibly provide for us like Elisha had done?

John 6:11 (ESV) Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. If they questioned Jesus’ ability to provide, they didn’t do so for very long. How much bread and fish did they each receive?

John 6:11 (ESV) Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. If they questioned Jesus’ ability to provide, they didn’t do so for very long. How much bread and fish did they each receive? The provisions surpassed “the tidbit that even two hundred denarii would have failed to supply. So also the true bread from heaven who gives life to the world far outstrips the manna in the desert.” - DA Carson, The Gospel According to John

John 6:12-13 (ESV) And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. Why did they pick up the leftovers?

John 6:12-13 (ESV) And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. Why did they pick up the leftovers? How much was leftover?

John 6:12-13 (ESV) And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. Why did they pick up the leftovers? How much was leftover? What do you think they did with the leftovers?

John 6:14 (ESV) When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” What was the response of the crowd?

John 6:14 (ESV) When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” What was the response of the crowd? Deut 18:15 (ESV) “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—

John 6:14 (ESV) When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” What was the response of the crowd? John 6:15 (ESV) Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. The newfound faith of the some in the crowd lacked depth. What did they want to do?

John 6:14 (ESV) When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” What was the response of the crowd? John 6:60, 66 (ESV) When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. The newfound faith of the some in the crowd lacked depth. What did they eventually do?

Both Philip and Andrew seemed to doubt whether the appropriate provisions could be made for the multitude. Rather than trusting in Jesus’ ability, they seemed to seek natural solutions to the problem. If anything, Jesus attempted to teach them the need to rely more fully on Him. This is a lesson we would do well to learn.

God’s blessings are never scarce. Jesus did not simply provide the multitude with a taste. The food produced was more than sufficient to meet their needs. So it is with the blessings of God. Psalm 103:2 (ESV) Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, James 1:17 (ESV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
