The method used for this is an entity-relationship model There is also a requirement to be able to describe collections of products and their relationships to each other The information model for this type of information is a classification. The model that has been adopted for this purpose is a one that is jointly agreed between IEC – for electronic components and ISO for other applications. 6. Conclusions Classification models are a convenient way of creating a data dictionary The IEC/ISO 13584 model has been used successfully in many applications for this purpose. It seems to be easily understood and accepted by domain experts as a means to capture their knowledge in a formal structure.
