Parts library and data dictionary Dr. Norman Swindells, CEng, FIMMM Ferroday Ltd, UK Tuesday, April 21, 2015(c) Ferroday Ltd, 2015 Vico Equense 1

ISO 13584 Parts library Information models in the ISO 10303 series specify the description of a single instance of a product. The method used for this is an entity-relationship model There is also a requirement to be able to describe collections of products and their relationships to each other The information model for this type of information is a classification. The model that has been adopted for this purpose is a one that is jointly agreed between IEC – for electronic components and ISO for other applications. The ISO version is ISO 13584 Parts library (PLIB) Tuesday, April 21, 2015(c) Ferroday Ltd, 2015 Vico Equense 2

Example of PLIB in ISO 13399 ISO 13399 Cutting tool data representation and exchange Multipart standard funded by Sandvik Coromant Responsibility of ISO TC29 Small tools Part 1 is an entity-relationship model to describe the assembly of a modern machine cutting tool Uses SC4 resources – EXPRESS, Part 21 etc. The rest of the parts describe the data dictionary, a description of how it was created and the process for managing any changes. The standard is supported by software for the creation and display – provided by the University of Poitiers Tuesday, April 21, 2015(c) Ferroday Ltd, 2015 Vico Equense 3

Modern cutting tools 21/04/2015(c) 2015 Ferroday Ltd, Vico Equense 4

Conclusions Classification models are a convenient way of creating a data dictionary The IEC/ISO 13584 model has been used successfully in many applications for this purpose. It seems to be easily understood and accepted by domain experts as a means to capture their knowledge in a formal structure. The means to connect such a dictionary to an entity- relationship model has been defined in SC4 and is used by ISO 13399 software Tuesday, April 21, 2015(c) Ferroday Ltd, 2015 Vico Equense 6
