3  What are the literacy shifts in the Florida Standards and how can Social Science content be used to master complex text?  How build literacy in Social Science using differentiated instruction that will help me to improve student achievement?  How can Social Sciences’ instructional resources help me to plan effective instruction for all Levels in my classroom? 6 Using Learning Styles in S.S. Instruction Using Differentiated Instruction to build literacy while keeping Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence learning styles in mind help the instructor to adapt the Social Studies lessons to best meet the needs of the of all the learners.

17 Using Differentiation to build literacy Social Science Reading There are a number of ways to use D.I. in Social Science. Students can use graphic organizer that can help the student focus on the main ideas of the text or document The use of technology to help students through educational videos and interactive sites.

18 Graphic Organizers Can Be Made to Help Students Organize their Thoughts on Different Levels All students are given the same information but in a way that allows for varying reading and writing levels

19 Social Science Best Practices Stimuli-Based Instruction Allows for D.I. through pictures and Vocabulary Definition: The use of primary or secondary sources of information, emphasizing content/ skills explicitly stated in standards/ benchmarks, to increase student content knowledge, analytical skills, and engagement. (e.g. political cartoons, graphs, quotes, etc.)
