1 Energy Performance for an Office Building: Wind Analysis
Presentation by Fahmida Shamsuddin 10 December, 2014

2 Outline Introduction Literature review Case Study Methodology
Discussion Conclusion

3 Introduction 40% energy consumption in residential and commercial building according CBEC Survey, 2013. Providing natural ventilation is one of the steps to reduce consumption. Developing a schematic model by Building information modeling (BIM) helps to improve building design . Flow design is one of the BIM tools which analyze flow pattern in urban context. The purpose of this paper is to understand mainly how wind flow design software can be used for building energy performances and how we can use it during design.

4 Literature review MacLeamy Curve
Patrick MacLeamy,CEO of HOK introduced it 2005 Shows cost of decisions mapping along the timeline of a typical construction period. How BIM can improve decision in early stage. Decision made early in a project (During Designed, DD) can be made at lower cost and with greater effectiveness.

5 Case Study Commerzbank , Germany Tower at PNC Plaza, USA.

6 Commerzbank Location: Frankfurt, Germany. Architects: Norman Foster Floor: 56 Construction: 1870 Award: Awards Green Building Award of the City of Frankfurt RIBA Architecture Award Concept: To utilize the idea of receiving natural light and cycle of natural air ventilation a rainforest uses. energy consumption levels equivalent to half those of conventional office towers.

8 2. Tower at PNC Plaza Concept
Location: Pittsburg, USA Architects: Gensler architects Floor: 33 Construction: 2015 Award: 2012 Evergreen Awards Expected to the greenest office tower in the world. & surpass LEED Platinum standards  Concept A skyscraper with innovative, low energy strategy to heat and cool the building. Three key goals: Energy Responder Workplace Innovator Community Builder

10 Research Questions Methodology
What is the impact of wind flow in an existing site? How natural ventilation wind can be used to improve the performance of a building? Methodology Context: The site is in Goose Island, Chicago, USA. Instruments: Climate Consultant 5.5, Autodesk Revit 2015, Autodesk flow design and sketch up.

11 Procedures Wind wheel analysis _Climate consultant
3D modeling in Revit Import Revit file in Flow Design and simulation in Flow Design

12 Wind flow through perforation but not enough

13 Conclusion : Some proposal :
Increase the perforation in order to allow natural ventilation to cross over. To draw wind through wind shaft for example with stair and loft core Strategies like PNC tower using double skin or solar collectors to drag warm air outside building.
