2 Warm Up 1). Mary bought 36 pieces of fruit at the store. If 25% of the fruit was apples, how many apples did she buy? 2). Ken won 15 games of checkers. If he played 35 games, what percent did he win? 3). Joe used 6 pencils, this was 60% of his pack. How many pencils were in the pack? 4). There are 300 students at Valley Middle School. There are 170 boys, what percent of the students are girls? 9 apples 42.9% 10 pencils 43.3%

3 Sales Tax-an additional amount of money charged on items that people buy. Tax is added. Example: A graphing calculator costs $95, and the sales tax rate is 6.75%. What is the sales tax? What is the total price with tax? Tax is $6.41 To find the total price you add the tax to the price of the graphing calculator. $101.41

4 Discount/Markdown- the amount by which the regular price of an item is reduced or lowered. Discount is subtracted. Example: Alan wants to buy a set of skis that has a regular price of $150. This week, the skis are on sale at 25% discount. What is the discount or the amount saved? What is the new cost of the skis? $37.50 To find the new cost you subtract $37.50 from the original cost of $150. The new price is $112.50.

5 Tip-an amount you add to the price of a service that you receive. Tip is added. Example: Ina went to a restaurant for lunch. Her bill was $10.45, if she leaves a 15% tip how much was the tip? How much will she pay in total? The tip is $1.57. To find the total you add 10.45 + 1.57. The total is $ 12.02.

6 Practice 1). Kim wants to buy a sweater that costs $25.00. It goes on sale for 30% off. How much will she pay for the sweater? 2). If Kim has to pay 7% sales tax for her sweater, how much money will she pay in total for the sweater? 3). Jack bought a notebook for $2.99, a mechanical pencil for $1.50 and some erasers for $0.55. How much will he pay at the register if sales tax is 6.5%?

7 Practice 4). Julie wanted to tip her hairdresser 20%. If her haircut cost $35, how much did she pay in all? 5). Yang went to the store to buy a new video game. The game cost $59.99, but was on sale for 20% off. How much money will he pay in total if the tax is 6.5%?
