CONCENTRATION Amount vs. Concentration Solution preparation and concentration BTV Solutes

A MOUNT VS. C ONCENTRATION Concentration: the amount of a substance (solute) in a total volume of a mixture; expressed as a ratio (i.e. 1:2 concentration) Concentration= solute/ volume Amount: how much of a factor is present (i.e. 1 cup) Thus concentration and amount are not the same and should never be referred as such. MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations

M ORE ABOUT CONCENTRATION Examine the following examples of concentration each tube contains 10mLs solution. What is the concentration of each tube? Solute:4 stars Volume:10 mls Concentration: 4 stars/10mls Solute:1 heart Volume:10 mls Concentration: 1 heart/10mls Solute:3 triangles Volume:10 mls Concentration: 3 triangles/10mls Solute:5 circles Volume:10 mls Concentration: 5 circles/10mls = 0.5 circle / ml MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations

S OLUTIONS WITH A C ONCENTRATION Much like the proportion section, preparing a solution with a concentration Requires manipulation of fractions. Ex) You are asked to make 300mLs of a solution with a concentration Of 10g NaCl per 100mL. How would you solve this problem? 1. Set up a proportions equation 2. Solve for x MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations

W HAT IS BTV? BTV: Bring to Volume o This is a common term used when making solutions that require a solute be dissolved in a solution. o A solute is not always added to the total volume of solution because this can distort the final volume especially when the solute is large. MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations

L ETS T RY I T !! You are asked to make 100mL of a solution of NaCl at a concentration of 1mg/mL. How would you make this solution? 1. Set up the proportion equation 2. Dissolve 100mg of NaCl in water and bring to volume of 100mL. MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations

S AME C ONCENTRATION OF S OLUTE IN D IFFERENT S OLUTIONS This may sound confusing, but this is actually very simple to understand. Two solutions with two different volumes can have the same concentration. For example, solution A is a 10mL solution with 5g/mL of NaCl and solution B is a 20mL solution with 10g/mL of NaCl.These are two different total volumes but express the same concentration of 0.5g NaCl/mL. Answer: a and b What two solutions have the same concentration? MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations

F INDING A S OLUTE IN A S OLUTION If you were asked to find out how much solute is in a solution, how would you go about it? This task is fairly easy, if you can find how much of a solute you would need for a concentration, you can easily find the how much solute is in a solution. Lets try this together… Ex) You have a protein solution of 100mL with a concentration of 1mg/mL. How much protein is present? 1. Set up the proportion equation X= 100mg of protein 2. So there are 100mg of protein in the total solution. MATC-Topic 7- Concentrations
