2 Introduction Rapid industrial growth transformed American business and society. The rise of Big Business turned the United States into one of the most economically powerful countries in the modern world.

3 Fighting for Profits Until the mid-nineteenth century, most businesses were run by one person or family. Industrialization changed this characteristic of business. Railroads provided businesses with access to raw materials and customers from farther and farther away. Business leaders begin combining funds and resources.

4 Corporations Investors developed a form of group ownership known as a corporation. In a corporation, a number of people share the ownership of a business. If a corporation experienced economic problems, the investors lost no more than they had originally invested in the business. Corporations had the same rights as an individual.

5 Corporations Corporations were great for expanding markets. Had access to large amounts of capital (invested money), which allowed them to fund new technology, enter new industries, or run large plants across the country. 1870: The number of corporations in America increased dramatically.
