Motion in a Straight Line Distance, Position, and Displacement

Describing the Motion of objects Kinematics: the study of motion Motion: the change in an objects location

Determining Distance Your teacher walks from one end of the classroom to the other. Determine the distance he has traveled.

What factors were involved in distance? Magnitude of length traveled by an object in motion Symbol for Distance (d)

Locating my textbook Your teacher has misplaced his textbook. Partner up and find the textbook. Determine a way to tell him where it is without physically pointing at the book.

Factors involved in describing position

Scalar and Vector Quantities

Displacement vs. Distance

Displacement Continued

600m 1500m Home School Library W E Examples!!!

Sample Problems on the Board

Problem 1: (As a class) A golfer hits a ball from a golf tee at a position of 16.4m[W] relative to the clubhouse. The ball comes to rest at a position of 64.9m[W] relative to the clubhouse. Determine the displacement of the golf ball relative to the clubhouse.

Problem 2: (Try it out on your own) A rabbit runs 3.8m[N] and stops to nibble on some grass. The rabbit then hops 6.3m[N] to scratch against a small tree. What is the rabbit’s total displacement.

Practice Problem 3 A man leaves his house and walks 25m[E] and then notices his friend calling him and turns back and walks 13m[W] to meet him. What is his total displacement relative to his house.

Problem 4: Try it on your own A skateboarder slides 4.2m up a ramp, stops, and then slides 2.7m down the ramp before jumping off. What is the total displacement up the ramp?

Problem 5: On your own A train changes its position from 151km[E] of the train station to 56km[W] of the train station. What is the displacement of the train relative to the train station?

Homework!!! Pg.13 #1-4

Another way to solve Displacement problems Vector Scale Diagrams: vectors represented by a line segment with a direction the line segment represents the magnitude and has an arrowhead pointing in a particular direction

Vector Scale Diagrams Continued A B A B A B Tail Tip

Vector Scale Diagrams Continued

Vector Scale Diagram Continued Next you must draw your vectors out to scale, drawing them from tip to tail from some decided reference point Then measure the total length from the first tail to the last tip Write your answer including the magnitude and the direction DO NOT FORGET THE DRECTION

Problem 1: As a class A robin flies 32m[S] to catch a worm and then flies 59m[N] back to its nest. Use a vector diagram to determine the robin’s total displacement.

Homework!!! pg.13 #5,6
