11 In 1540, he led a group of Spaniards, Africans, and Indians on a search for the 7 cities of gold in the SW United States

13 This Aztec ruler thought Cortes was a god predicted by an Aztec legend to return at the time Cortes arrived. He was killed during fighting between the Aztecs & Spanish.

14 Moctezuma II

15 The Aztec ruler following Moctezuma II, he was captured and killed when the Spanish closed off all entrances to the city, so no food or water could reach the Aztec defenders

16 Cuauhtemoc

17 Leader of the Inca. He promised to fill his prison cell with gold if Pizarro would release him. He did his part, but Pizarro killed him anyway.

18 Atahualpa

19 This African slave escaped and was chased for 30 years, but never recaptured. He set up the city of San Lorenzo de los Negros.

20 Yanga

21 Also known as Malinche, she convinced many Indians to join Cortes to challenge the Aztec.

23 This was a system where new colonists where given a large area of land that included Indian villages

28 Native Americans in the encomienda system worked for free, but the colonists had to promise to do these four things for them

30 By 1570, over 200,000 Africans had been taken to New Spain to perform these 3 tasks.

32 Under Spanish law, Africans could earn money in their spare time for the purpose of doing this

34 Before Columbus showed up, this tribe raided the Taino villages for 300 years and took captives
