1 Fitting mini-lessons into common course frameworks The GeoPRISMS TUES Team

2 What are some examples of common courses: Geomorp Structure Geophysics Petrology Sed/strat Tectonics Oceanography Earth history/paleo Natural hazards geodynamics Geochemistry Mineralogy

3 Is your lesson/module designed for a specific class? Can it be easily adapted to another class? – Parts may fit even fit into an intro or a grad class

4 Example The Role of Magmatism on Continental Rifting (just happens to be mine) – I have developed this from the standpoint of a culminating activity in a geophysics class – My class is typically based around common exploration methods – The class is being tweaked to include this module as the final 2 weeks of classes (this fall)

5 Current Plan (fall 2013 class) Go through common geophysical techniques (reflection, refraction, gravity, magnetics, seafloor mapping, downhole techniques) November 19 – lecture November 21 – lecture & assessment November 26 – lab session 1 December 3 – lab session 2 Note that Thanksgiving gets tangled into the middle of this

6 Parts of this module (esp. the lab) could be adapted easily to a structural geology class The module would also also fit directly into a tectonics class (also at the grad level)

7 Future Plan Hand module off to graduate-level global tectonics class for spring 2014 – The hope is that this will be used as an introductory module Wildcard – will also be used as part of a Ph.D. entrance exam in October

8 For breakout – one thing to think about a strawman - how to set up an entire class from the existing mini-lessons?
