Bonneau TS/CV/Detector Cooling Compressors HAUG –Compressors HAUG – (IT-2884/EP/ATL) - We are late due to delay in SR1 plant – Should placed the order for 2 nd compressor at the beginning of 2005. Booster –Booster – 73 suppliers contacted in the last 2 years. Only 2 positive offers (128 and 271 kCHF) far too expensive. Pump on liquid –Pump on liquid – After bad experience with selected supplier we start new survey. Already 5 offers in hand Storage tank –Storage tank – Suppliers identified. We have to finalize the design before sending the order. Condenser –Condenser – Order ready to be placed Valves –Valves – Call for tender in the purchasing office Piping –Piping – We are ready to send out a call for tender Concrete basement –Concrete basement – Drawing to extract – Contact TS/CE Cooling plant in USA15

Bonneau TS/CV/Detector Cooling Control unit in USA15 PLC and Electr. –PLC and Electr. – Review of the last design done. 4 PLCs needed instead of 3. Nothing bought Pneumatic –Pneumatic – Order for E->P converters placed – 2/3 pneumatic valves selected. Installation drawing to be done. Compressor for 16b air –Compressor for 16b air – To be found Vacuum –Vacuum – System to be designed

Status of the ATLAS ID Evaporative cooling system JCOV 25 Nov.2004 13 P. Bonneau TS/CV/Detector Cooling Detector loop Heaters Various prototypes tested Stable operation: –up to a power duty cycle of 95% –with simple On/Off control Temperatures of heating element OK (max around 60 °C), far from max limit Design mature and ready for final prototype pressure drops and occupancy of extrapolated final size OK

Status of the ATLAS ID Evaporative cooling system JCOV 25 Nov.2004 14 P. Bonneau TS/CV/Detector Cooling Detector loop Heat exchanger Design is different for the three sub detectors due to different layout and geometrical constraints All countercurrent type Pixel: parallel type external. Al inlet and return tubes glued together over 1.5 m. Simple design, possible with small power load Barrel SCT: parallel type internal. Two inlet tubes are routed inside the return tube over a length of 1.5 m and parallel to the return tube axis EC SCT: inlet tube is coiled in spiral inside the return tube over less than 0.5 m.

Status of the ATLAS ID Evaporative cooling system JCOV 25 Nov.2004 15 P. Bonneau TS/CV/Detector Cooling Detector loop Capillaries Flow is function of: Dp, length, ID, inlet liquid T (HEX efficiency) Flow very sensitive to ID change: need test every capillary during production trimming the length to get the right flow Hundreds of data taken, but extrapolation is not easy, so need to check almost every geometry/condition Final capillaries for EC SCT are available. 2 IDs: 0.68 – 0.76 mm (we ordered enough quantities of the bigger ID sufficient also for barrel SCT if it will turn out to be correct) A test setup is being built to trim the capillaries to length
