2 + NSERC Awards  Work in industry  supervision of a full- time staff member  Work in a university-setting  supervision of a faculty member with an active NSERC award Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Award (IUSRA) Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) 2 Types:

5 + Eligibility To apply for an award:  Canadian citizen/permanent resident when apply  Registered in a bachelor’s degree  Minimum cumulative average of 75% To hold an award:  Completed 1-year of study  Registered full-time in the term before the award  NOT have started a graduate program in these fields  Be engaged throughout the tenure of the award

6 + Award Duration and Compensation  16 consecutive weeks  full-time basis with start/end dates determined by you and your supervisor  Award is a value of $4500 provided by NSERC  rest (at least 25%) supplemented by host university Total = $5600 +

7 + Receiving Payment NSERC Host University You

8 + Finding a Supervisor  Must hold an active NSERC grant  List of eligible Biology supervisors at Western  Similar lists are often available on the websites of other universities Notify Stefani Tichbourne after finding a supervisor

9 + Application Package  Form 202: Part I and II  Access to Academic Records 2016  Biology Student Statement Form 2016  Resume (1-2 pages)

10 + Basic Application  Form 202 -Part I (completed by student)  Requires registration with NSERC online system and must submit unofficial Western Transcript before being able to print application  Reference number generated upon completion, must be provided to Proposed Supervisor  Form 202 - Part II (completed by Proposed Supervisor)  Include a brief project proposal in which the student role is clearly specified

11 + Biology Student Statement Form  Posted on the Western Biology Department Website  Applications now include a written statement (250 words max) from the applicant regarding the importance, to them, of receiving this award, relevant work or volunteer experience, research interests, etc.

12 + To be Submitted  The following must be submitted to Stefani Tichbourne in NCB 301D by January 8, 2016  Signed copy of Form 202 (I and II)  “Biology Student Statement Form 2016”  “Access to Academic Records 2016”  1-2 page resume Transcripts not necessary for Western students

13 + Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Award (IUSRA)

14 + Application Process  Form 202 - Part I  Complete form and send Reference Number generated to the host organization  Must upload your official transcript as an attachment  Form 202 - Part II  Organization will complete using the Reference Number you provide to log in

15 + Student Final Report  Must be submitted at the end of your tenure  1-page report  Name, application number, organization name  Summary of progress, problems encountered, comparison of results/objectives, general experience  NOT a technical report
