Demographic Transition Review FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 TH, 2015

Demographic Transition  Model of how economic development alters population dynamics. 1. Preindustrial 2. Early Transitional 3. Late Transitional 4. Industrial

Pre-Industrial  Birth and death rates fluctuated – but birth rates tend to match death rates so the population grows slowly.  People hunted for food and there were food shortages, malnutrition  Lack of sanitation and medicine keep death rates high.  Small population: few elderly, more younger people.

Early Transitional  Birth rates remain high initially and Death rates drop dramatically. Population increases very quickly.  Hygiene, nutrition, improve. Fewer children died when they were born.  Agriculture – more children born to help with farms.  New advancements including housing, guns, and cars.  Education improves.

Late Transitional  Birth rates begin to fall (birth control, urbanization, women’s empowerment, fewer farms so less children needed).  Population may have increased from 2x to 4x by this point.

Industrial  Transition is complete.  Both death and birth rates are low.  Population is in equilibrium or even decreasing.

Factors that affect populations activity  Create a graph of your assigned topic.  Share your graph with your group.  Answer the reflection questions in your notebook.
