1 RADAR & EW: WORKING TOGETHER Knowledge Ramolefe Manager Technical: Armscor Radar & EW Group LEDGER CSIR 02 December 2010
2 PRESENTATION OUTLINE AIM IDENTIFY SOME KEY ROLE PLAYERS TECHNOLOGY FOCUS SOUTH AFRICAN RADAR INTEREST GROUP FUTURE POSSIBILITIES OF CO-OPERATION THE ROAD AHEAD SUMMARY
3 AIM Provide a BRIEF overview of the scope of work in the area of Radar & EW in the military environment Highlight some of the current Armscor projects Encourage more COLLABORATION among STAKEHOLDERS (Industry, Research Institutes, and Universities)
4 NATIONAL ROLE PLAYERS IN THE MILITARY ENVIRONMENT CSIR (DPSS), IMT REUTECH RADAR SYSTEMS TELLUMAT SAAB EDS, GEW DENEL DYNAMICS UNIVERSITIES DoD DoT, DST, DPE (via SOEs) And many more…
5 CURRENT TECHNOLOGY FOCUS RADAR & EW: CONDOR: - WHAT IS IT? - THREAT? - CONDOR SUBSYSTEMS
CURRENT TECHNOLOGY FOCUS ACTIVE PROTECTION SYSTEM: - WHAT IS IT? - PLATFORM - THREAT?
CURRENT TECHNOLOGY FOCUS FIRING TRIALS (Alkantpan) 7
9 South African Radar Interest Group (SARIG) Established 2008 Comprises all role players as listed Under the auspices of AMD AIM: “The South African Radar Interest Group is responsible for dealing with issues relating to the interests and advancement of Radar and radar-related development in South Africa. This includes, but is not limited to, tertiary education, continuous education and industrial co- operation.”
10 SARIG TECHNOLOGY FOCUS SARIG HAS DECIDED to: Support the AWARENET Concept as developed by F. Anderson of DPSS as a focus area of radar technology and co-operation Actively participate in the establishment of post graduate education at universities (2011) Ensure that the limited resources in the country are utilised optimally in the greater national interests.
FUTURE POSSIBILITIES OF CO- OPERATION - EW New Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) for airborne platforms Self protection systems for high value assets Development of novel intercept techniques and advanced ECM hardware (e.g. Enigma) Participation in AWARENET
12 THE ROAD AHEAD Continued collaboration is key (Industry) Post-graduate research in Radar & EW Continuation with relevant product solutions; serving and making the client
13 SUMMARY Good understanding of sensors is critical in what we do We have a growing Radar and EW capability and this can/will lead to marketable products where necessary. DoD supports Radar and EW military related initiatives– both acquisition and technology development
14 SUMMARY (cont) SARIG brings balance and strengthens participation from different quarters. ALL Stakeholders have a pivotal role to play in the radar and EW capability going into the future, if it is maintained
