3 What is Podcasting? A method of distributing multimedia files such as audio or videos, over the Internet for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The distribution format of a podcast uses RSS feeds. Users subscribe to the feeds and hear or view the material at the time of their choosing using a feed reader.

6 Types Of Podcasts  Audio podcasts are usually an MP3 file and are the most common types of podcasts.  Enhanced podcasts can have images to go along with the audio.  Video podcasts are movies, complete with sound.

13 Equipment needed to produce a podcast?  All you need to create your own podcast is a computer, a microphone and Internet access.  The programs and applications needed to edit, host and distribute the podcast are free.  Optional equipment includes portable MP3 players such as i-Pods or i-Rivers.

14 Steps in creating a podcast  Record your podcast  Edit the audio file into an audio editor  Add the introduction and endings  Save file as an MP3 file  Publish your podcast  Create your podcast newsfeed (RSS)  Register your podcast (feedburner.com)

15 Podcasting Using Audacity... Downloading CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  Download “Audacity’’ (Windows version) and save to a folder.  Once downloaded, click on it to install it.  Also download the LAME encoder to the same folder and then extract all files in it.

16 Podcasting Using Audacity... Preferences CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  Connect headphone set to computer.  Open “Audacity’’. Go to Edit  Preferences.  Under the Audio I/O tab, ensure that your recording and playback devices are selected.  Under the File Formats tab, click on ‘Find Library’ and then point to the LAME encoder file (lame_enc.dll) that you extracted earlier. Also, change the Bit Rate to 64.

17 Podcasting Using Audacity... Recording  Press the Record button.  When finished, press the Stop button, then the Rewind button.  Press Play to play your recording. RecordStop Play Pause Rewind

CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  You can also record using portable audio recording devices e.g. iRiver, Edirol (by Roland), PDA’s  When using Audacity, ensure that you are recording at 44100 Hz sampling rate or you will run into problems later.  Record in a quiet place.

19 Podcasting Using Audacity... Editing CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  Open the recorded file (if it is not already open). (File  Open  Select the file.  Listen to your file, noting parts that need to be edited (or deleted).  Click on the + or – icons in order to get a good view of your track.

CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  To delete a part of your recording, select the part by clicking and dragging on it using your left mouse button.  Press the Play button after selection, to play only the selected section. Your can increase or decrease selection by dragging on the edges of selected area. (Use the Zoom buttons).  Press the Delete key to remove unwanted sections.  Save as an Audacity project file. (Does not alter the original file).

21 Podcasting Using Audacity... Add Audio... CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  To add audio or music (use Podsafe music): Go to Project  Import Audio. Browse to the audio file to import it. The new audio is dropped into a new track.  Use the Time Shift Tool to drag the audio clips to position them.  Use Effects such as Amplify, Fade In, Fade Out and Normalize. Experiment! You can always UNDO to go back.

22 Podcasting Using Audacity... Exporting CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  Save your project. It is a good idea to save frequently.  Go to File  Export as MP3.  Fill in the ID3 tags for the MP3 file in the form that appears. Press OK.  An MP3 file will be created which you can listen to by clicking on it.

24 Publishing Your Podcast  Unless you have your own web site, you can publish podcasts by using a free podcasting service. 25 Publishing Your Podcast...Using MyPodcast.com  Sign up for a FREE account.  After you log in, you will download a small program called MyPodcast Recorder, which allows you to Record and Publish files with ease.  Open the MP3 file that you have already created and publish it by using the program.  A web page is created, using the template of your choosing. 26 Publishing Your Podcast...Using Odeo  Sign Up for a FREE account.  After you log in, Odeo gives you many options for creating the MP3 file.  Select: Upload MP3s that you have already created from software such as Audacity or Audition  Odeo lets you publish you audio (MP3) file, turn it into a podcast, add it to the Odeo directory, and select a player that points to your Odeo hosted podcast.  You can then add it to a web page.

27 Publishing Your Podcast...  Submit the web address of your RSS feed to podcast directories, including iTunes, to tell the world about the podcast!  You can submit to various directories or search engines here:  Vital Podcasts  Pod Lounge

29 What if you are not hearing any sound? CEGSA Conference2007 Thangaes Waran  Check to see if the headphone set is connected properly.  Check if there is a ‘muting’ button or volume control on the headset.  Go to the ‘Control Panel’ and click on the ‘Sound’ icon. Check the settings for the Playback devices. (if not ask for HELP).
