1 H C A L HF Cable Plant Options HF Cable Plant Options December 22, 2010 T. Shaw

2 H C A L Existing RoBox 24 PMTs/RoBox Signal & Reference signals sent on a Pair of Coax for each PMT 72 RoBox in system

3 H C A L Current HF FE Module Front Panel Each FE module reads out 6 QIEs.

4 H C A L HF Cable Upgrade Current plans Multi-anode readout -> Fit 2x or 4x channels/cabling into available space; no degradation in performance Use same FE modules Some kind of patch panel/connector adapter near FE crates to convert new cabling to present connectors.

5 H C A L Cabling Selection 4 cable schemes are under review 1.VPLSP cables; 24-pair, low skew, 100 ohm differential impedance 2.Samtec 50 ohm High Isolation Cable; 50 ohm coax 3.Tyco Z-Pack HM-ZD cables; using 26 AWG coax; highly customizable 4.Doubling of current cables(probably only plausible with a doubling of channels)

6 H C A L Samtec V-Port Cables We have (qty) 3 5-meter cables in hand!

7 H C A L Testing Samtec VPLSP

8 H C A L Testing Samtec VPLSP

9 H C A L Testing Samtec VPLSP

10 H C A L Samtec V-port Pros/Cons Pros Overall shield Rugged construction Cons Large reflection when we try to use it in common mode terminated to 50 ohms Conclusion Probably do not want to use this

11 H C A L Samtec 50 ohm coax cable assemblies We have (qty) 3 5-meter cables in hand!

12 H C A L Testing Samtec 50ohm Hi-Isolation Cables

13 H C A L Testing Samtec 50ohm Hi-Isolation Cables

14 H C A L Testing Samtec 50ohm Hi-Isolation Cables

15 H C A L Samtec Hi-Iso Pros/Cons Pros Cable almost as good as what we are using in terms of transmission/reflection Smaller footprint than what we use now (~50% smaller) Fairly rugged connector Cons No overall shield; can explore custom shield with vendor, but it will not be incorporated into connector

16 H C A L Tyco Electronics Z-Pack connector line offers dense cable assemblies We have some long 26AWG coax samples in hand!

17 H C A L Testing Tyco Coax w/ SMA connectors

18 H C A L Testing Tyco Coax w/ SMA connectors

19 H C A L Testing Tyco Coax w/ SMA connectors

20 H C A L Testing Tyco Coax w/ SMA & Hm-Zd connectors

21 H C A L Testing Tyco Coax w/ SMA & Hm-Zd connectors

22 H C A L Testing Tyco Coax w/ SMA & Hm-Zd connectors

23 H C A L Tyco z-Pack Pros/Cons Pros Cable performance close to what we have now Density allows a large number of conductors in a given space Cons Density of connectors will provide challenge routing from connector to QIEs Density may contribute to crosstalk (need to look at this) No Overall shield; vendor will work with us, but the overall shield is not incorporated into the connector Connectors are NOT rugged; I think they could be used, but with care!

24 H C A L Spec’s of current Cable

25 H C A L Current D-shell Cables

26 H C A L Testing D-shell Cable

27 H C A L Testing D-shell Cable

28 H C A L Testing D-shell Cable

29 H C A L D-shell Pros/Cons Pros Best cable performance Overall shield incorporated into design Rugged, proven design No special adapters needed for input to current FE Electronics Boards Cons Large footprint, could increase density by loading all 8 instead of 6 positions. Probably only allows for two-anode readout!

30 H C A L Main trunk cable costs (does not include adapters or cabling inside RoBox)

31 H C A LConclusionsConclusions Recommendations 2 Anode readout Buy d-sub cables similar to what we have now, but stuff all 8 coax positions 4 Anode readout Pursue the Tyco Z-pack cable solution. Second option could be Samtec’s Hi-isolation cables
