SC.912.L.18.9 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

You need to know: 1. How photosynthesis and cellular respiration are related ( the products of one are the reactants of the other). 2. The reactants, products and basic functions of photosynthesis, aerobic, and anaerobic respiration. 3. How ATP is connected with energy transfers within the cell. 4. Photosynthesis stores energy while cellular respiration releases energy.

 Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are OPPOSITE processes.  The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular reparation and vice versa.

Photosynthesis Process used by plants and other autotrophs to capture light energy and use it to power chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and energy rich carbohydrates ReactantsProducts Carbon dioxide Glucose WaterOxygen Light energy

Cellular Respiration Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen ReactantsProducts GlucoseCarbon dioxide OxygenWater Energy

 Photosynthesis STORES energy while cellular respiration RELEASES energy.

 Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and cellular respiration puts it back.  Photosynthesis releases oxygen into the atmosphere, and cellular respiration uses that oxygen to release energy from food.

 The release of energy by cellular respiration takes place in plants, animals, fungi, protists, and most bacteria.  Energy capture by photosynthesis occurs only in plants, algae, and some bacteria.

Similarities Carbon dioxide, water, glucose, oxygen and energy are present in both reactions Both reactions at some point produce ATP.
