Driving Question How do color and shape affect Abstract Expressionist artist?

Thesis statement Abstract Expressionism artists create simplified or exaggerated paintings through the use of color and shape.

Interesting facts Jackson Pollock was considered to be an action artist due to the way he applied his medium to the canvas. He urbanized a new technique called Action Painting which is defined as dripping thinned paint onto raw canvas laid on the ground using wide and rhythmic sweeps of a large and loaded brush or more usually direct from the paint can. Arshile Gorky- a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Him and his sister had fled to New York and arrived at Ellis Island in 1920.

What I did & how it was done I taught two eighth grade art classes at TCMS I developed a lesson plan about using color and shape to create art and how artists create art with knowing that art is always evolving and mistakes can be turned into something new.

My mentor and I Mentor: Laurie Sloan; TCMS art teacher She was my art teacher for 3 years at TCMS and I always admired her art and teaching methods. My mentor has influenced me in many ways. While I attended TCMS she always encouraged me to create my art to the best of my potential. She always talked to me about pursuing a future career in art. We met up several times to work on creating the lesson plan for teaching the classes. After we were finished with the lesson plan, we began practicing the project that we had found. It took a few different pieces to find the right example but once I had created the final piece, it showed the layering and mixing of colors as well as the shapes, figures, and/or pictures they could create.

Connections While I worked on my Graduation Project, I gained more self-responsibility and organizational skills. I learned that with being an art teacher, you have to create a lesson plan and practice your lesson before teaching it. Basically I learned how to work on my own time and be self-reliable. My paper talked about how color and shape were used by artists and when I taught the two eighth grade classes, they learned how to experiment with color and find shapes within their pieces.

Successes and Challenges Getting the okay to teach the two 8 th grade classes at TCMS The final painting that I did The 8 th grade classes were great I chose a topic that I have a strong passion about Getting the opportunity to have the a mentor that had experience in what I was doing Getting the main point of the project across to the students Getting a final example done for the teaching Having to wait for the inter-office mail to come back and forth between schools

Future plans Where do I see myself in five years? Within the next five years, I see myself finishing my associates of arts here at Craven and then hopefully attending UNCW and obtaining my bachelors degree and possibly my masters degree.
