ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Integration center (867) First final SM being integrated now Expect to ramp up to 3 SM being integrated in parallel 3 ACQ setups are being equipped ( 2 ready, 3rd in progress) Process: commission single ‘channel’ prior to insertion using light weight acq/analysis + dedicated GUI ( single channel = VFE, TT, Token Ring) Once SM fully assemble readout all 1700 channels and operate system using LHC like setup for at least 1 week continously (only data no trigger!)

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Integration center SW needs Basic XDAQ application to read data from DCC and transfer it to monitoring task. Simplified logging: data not meant to be kept forever CCS: ‘train and run-in’ DAQ controls. Specifically will have to go through sequences to change systematically parameters ( e.g. delay scan, pedestal scans). Read-out of leakage currents and temperatures Monitoring task: - for special runs determine which parameter set is the operational one.Eg delay scans - else check quality of data in an automatic way and report to crew only problems Data sets shall be self describing: no DB to tell monitoring task that a given event belongs to a delay scan …

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Cosmic ray calibration (H4) Use transfer chariot to support SM (mounted in storage jig) Calibrate each crystal by using muons going through a single crystal Incline SM by 20 degrees to gain rate for Mod 4 crystals Trigger using plane of scintillators below SM in coincidence with a scintillator placed in ‘LHC luminous area’. Use additional scintillator slabs above SM to anti-tag muons coming from SM side. Use ACQ cabling as for test beam

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi the cosmic calibration setup 1.Incline along eta by 15-20 deg. (it is the only possible solution for increasing statistics in Module 4) 2.Selective quasi-pointing trigger with edge taggers Edge taggers Trigger counters focal plane 4cm below SM ~20 cm above SM 1. Rate +30% in M4, -20% in M1 2. Spectrum more homogeneus 3720 mm 650 mm

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi H4 status 4 PC available: 1 for DAQ (no interface yet!), 1 for DB, 1 for DCS and 1 for data monitoring. Assume Laser monitoring farm available as from test beam Trigger: scintillator planes being assembled by IHEP people ( using old DELPHI counters) Mechanical setup: IHEP is also helping designing and assemblying the modification to the transfer chariots to house the SM. ACQ: to start with one should use what is available for 867. Assume that it will upgraded as soon as reliable XDAQ 3 version exists Expect SM to come to H4 in 4 weeks.

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi H4 operation H4 has two goals: - to collect good cosmic rays to allow a calibration with statistical precision at the 1% level - be the laboratory where we make sure that we have the DAQ which we need ( for cosmic challenge, LHC etc.) Maintain two data flow lines: - ‘simple’ aiming to reliably analyze data (root-analyzer) in real time and store them with simple data logger - std CMS data flow through RU, Event builder, FU, data logging through Orca.

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Cosmic Challenge Insert 1-2 SMs in HCAL inside cryostat after mid-september: need ACQ ready to go in place by then ECAL operation in Sx5 should be similar ( or even less complicated) to the one in H4. The challenge: synch with the other subdetector, use TTC generated clocks ( this will be doen in 904, but I think we should try if possible to do this also in H4 when they become available and debugged!) Be ready with the data processing: again an area to train in H4

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Installation First major appointment : february 2006. Aim to install all EB+ and some EB- depending on end of installation window. Next : nominally in October 2006 + possible final window in March 2007 Need:’portable’ DAQ ( HW and SW) to check that the SM is still functioning. My proposal would be to have something similar to what we have in 867 to check that the SM is ‘functioning’ and verify the SM is still behaving like it did in 867-H4. Will need some form of database of dead channels etc… Will not be an endurance test: we will have to be fast. We need dedicated monitoring ( possibly modified versions of root analyzers used in H4) which gives a yes-no answer

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Test Beam 2006: h4 Usual electron beam : from June 8 until November ( present idea is to ask for 2 weeks /month). Test the SM as they come out from the integration with e beam ( and then also with cosmic ! Use same DAQ as for cosmics (+ mods in monitoring)

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Test beam H2 Combined test with hcal Olivier Teller studying mechanical possibilities Agreement with HCAL community that they will take care of most of the installation and XDAQ integration issues (our XDAQ should be the same as H4) We should try to commission this area from the DAQ point of view as soon as possible so leaving XDAQ team free to work when time available rather than stressed at a moment of possible peak demand ( mainly availability of off-det electronics). A possibility could be to move one SM from the cosmic calibration to H4 to commission DAQ and DCS and then leave it to HCAL to integrate …

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Commissioning After final cables are in place and if cooling setup reliable we should run the whole system. At first I think that an H4 like running ( without cosmics of course) should suffice. The aim should be to keep under control possible deterioration of the system and to develop the final local monitoring tasks This period might start shortly after the lowering of the YB0 in the pit as the cabling is scheduled to be the first task. Being ready to hook up a readout as soon as the cables are laid would also help getting cable problems fixed in almost real time…

ECAL Off detector Electronics Workshop Lisbon April 7-8 2005 T. Camporesi Summary A small team is going to be very busy in many places Off detector electronics risks to be available just in time in many of the sites we are opening… I have not mentioned EE and ES, but they will come online during 2006… An old italian saying: chi ben comincia e’ gia’ a meta’ dell’opera.
