3 Importance in Renaissance Filippo Brunelleschi was one of the foremost architects and engineers of the Italian renaissance. He was the first modern engineer and innovative problem solver. He built the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.

4 Background Second of 3 sons and his father was a distinguished notary in Florence. Initially trained as a gold smith and sculptor. Enrolled in the Arte Della Seta, the silk merchant guide.

5 History In 1401 Brunelleschi competed against Lorenzo Ghiberti and 5 other sculptors for the commission to make the bronze reliefs for the door of the Florence baptistery. Brunelleschi’s entry “The Sacrifice of Isaac,” was the high point of his career.

6 Miscellaneous Early in his architectural career, Brunelleschi rediscovered the principles of linear perspective, with these principles, one can draw a single vanishing point.
