Mean, Median, and Mode Connecting a Verbal Description to Table & Graph PART 1 Common Core #4 & #13

Mean, Median, and Mode Connecting a Verbal Description to Table & Graph The Math and Science Team at Smedley Middle School must decide on several fund- raisers to pay entry fees for contest and other expenses. In August, the students decide to have a Problem-A-Thon. Each student will work as many problems as possible in 20 minutes, they will get sponsors to give donations based on how many problems they work correctly. What factors might affect the success of the fund raiser?

Mean, Median, and Mode POSSIBLE ANSWERS Community Support How much $ per problem Calculators Regular or word problems Student motivation Beginning of school These are all variables but which is most important?

Mean, Median, and Mode Connecting a Verbal Description to Table & Graph Since it is a fundraiser, how much money raised and how many problems correct are the two most important variables.

Mean, Median, and Mode Connecting a Verbal Description to Table & Graph So lets say, M = money raised And p = correct problems (1)Which is a function of the other? (2)Which variable is dependent? Independent? (3) Write this in function notation.

Mean, Median, and Mode ANSWERS (1)Money raised is a function of correct problems worked. So,(2) money is the dependent variable and correct problems worked is the independent variable. (3) M(p) = p

Mean, Median, and Mode Connecting a Verbal Description to Table & Graph Ginny gets pledges for $2 per correct answer. Genaro gets pledges for $3 per correct answer. Write these two statements down as we will use them on the next table.

Mean, Median, and Mode Connecting a Verbal Description to Table & Graph (4) Complete the following table based on the two statements. I have started it for you. Correct Problems Process Column Ginny Money Raised by Ginny Process Column Genaro Money Raised by Genaro 5 5 2 = 10 $10 5 3 = 15 $15 10 10 2 = 20 $20 15 20 30 50 70 90 100

Mean, Median, and Mode Correct Table (5) Describe in words a pattern that you see in Ginny’s Column? How much will Ginny earn for 40 correct problems? What about 61 correct problems? Correct Problems Process Column Ginny Money Raised by Ginny Process Column Genaro Money Raised by Genaro 5 5 2 = 10 $10 5 3 = 15 $15 10 10 2 = 20 $20 10 3 = 30 $30 15 15 2 = 30 $30 15 3 = 45 $30 20 20 2 = 40 $40 20 3 = 60 $60 30 30 2 = 60 $60 30 3 = 90 $90 50 50 2 = 100 $100 50 3 = 150 $150 70 70 2 = 140 $140 70 3 = 210 $210 90 90 2 = 180 $180 90 3 = 270 $270 100 100 2 = 200 $200 100 3 = 300 $300 Ginny earns two times the number of problems. For 40, she will earn $80. She will earn $122 for 61.

Mean, Median, and Mode Correct Table (6) Describe in words a pattern that you see in Genaro’s Column? How many problems will Genaro need to get correct to earn $45? What about $230? Correct Problems Process Column Ginny Money Raised by Ginny Process Column Genaro Money Raised by Genaro 5 5 2 = 10 $10 5 3 = 15 $15 10 10 2 = 20 $20 10 3 = 30 $30 15 15 2 = 30 $30 15 3 = 45 $30 20 20 2 = 40 $40 20 3 = 60 $60 30 30 2 = 60 $60 30 3 = 90 $90 50 50 2 = 100 $100 50 3 = 150 $150 70 70 2 = 140 $140 70 3 = 210 $210 90 90 2 = 180 $180 90 3 = 270 $270 100 100 2 = 200 $200 100 3 = 300 $300 Genaro earns three times the number of problems. For $45, he will get 15 correct. For $230, he will get 77 correct.

Mean, Median, and Mode Correct Table (7) Write an expression to represent the ?’s for each process for p problems correctly worked.
